When the collective health of people in a community is at risk, an EGSL epidemiology investigation uses scientific methods to analyze the origin of the illness as well as provides solutions to manage it. Our world-class teams of scientists apply their expertise in toxicology and industrial hygiene to control and prevent illness and disease in schools, businesses, industry and other communities.

Case Study

In the winter of 2010, an outbreak of cough occurred at an elementary school in a Chicago suburb, with the highest incidence (80%) occurring between the kindergarten to 2nd grade students.  EGSL studied the risk factors. Among the 300 students in the school, 78 of the cases were identified as having an attack rate of 15.5 per 100. EGSL collected bacteria samples from various objects throughout the school and determined the presence of the contagion bordetella pertussis. EGSL’s solution included student and faculty immunizations; closing of the school for one week; sanitizing the entire facility; and cleaning the ventilation duct work.
